Mental health is the term we use to describe our psychological, emotional, and social well-being. It has a tremendous influence on how we think and feel, how we engage with others, the decisions we make, and how we live our lives. From childhood to adulthood, taking care of our mental wellness is important for supporting overall health at all stages of life.

Physical Activity Is Good for the Mind

The benefits of physical activity on mental health are well documented and include everything from better stress management, sharper cognitive function, lower rates of depression, improved sleep, and a better quality of life. Simply put, studies show that people who exercise regularly have better mental health and emotional wellbeing, and lower rates of mental illness.

Taking Care of Mental Health Is Important

About half the population in the United States will be diagnosed with a mental health disorder at some time in their life. Anxiety and anxiety disorders are the most common, affecting 40 million adults. Major depression is another common disorder that is also a leading cause of disability for adults. Our youth populations are affected as well, with about 20% of adolescents having a diagnosable mental health disorder.

Are You Getting Enough Physical Activity?

While it’s important to remember that mental health is comprised of several features and exercise alone isn’t a cure-all or substitute for a mental health professional, it’s worth exploring. According to the Mayo Clinic, engaging in at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, three to five days per week may significantly improve depression or anxiety symptoms.

And when you consider that the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week to support physical health, that amount of time will put you right in the sweet spot to experience the benefits of exercise both ways.
