Kids who participate in regular physical activity are more likely to continue healthy fitness habits as adults. So, if you’re looking for ways to encourage your kids to be more active, why not try some family activities?
Here are a few ways to make fitness part of your family’s routine:
1. Get outside and go for a walk.
One way to make fitness part of your family’s routine is to start taking a daily family walk. Or a bike ride, hike, etc. Not only is it a great way to promote activity, but it’s also a fun way to spend time together as a family. Even just ten to fifteen minutes after dinner provides benefits.
2. Encourage time away from screens.
Let’s face it; we’re all in front of a screen for a big chunk of most days. While some screen time has a place in your daily routine, it’s usually time spent without much movement. Take a look at your family’s screen time and set some boundaries for yourself and your kids. Set a good example and provide some alternative options.
3. Visit your local recreation centers.
If you’ve never visited your local recreation center, stop in and check out the programs available. Most rec centers offer a variety of programs and classes, so you’re likely to find something that suits each member of your family. In addition, some programs are specifically designed around family fun (and fitness). You might be surprised at what you discover!
4. Make activity easily accessible.
Another way to make fitness part of your family’s routine is to make physical activity easily accessible. Rather than electronic birthday gifts, swap in more active options like balls, racquets, etc. Leave this more active equipment someplace where everyone in your family can easily access it and have some fun together.
5. Set some family fitness goals.
It’s great to have personal fitness goals, but it might also be fun to set some fitness goals as a family. First, get input and ideas from your family members on what goals you could work toward together. Then, create a plan for how to achieve your goals. As you work toward your goals, chart your progress someplace visible, like on the front of the fridge. For example, you might have a weekly step goal or minutes of family activity. Finally, when your family accomplishes your goal, make sure to celebrate (in a healthy way)!
