Swim Level Descriptions:
Parent & Child
Children under the age of 3 learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim-readiness skills with their parents.
Level 1 – Tadpoles
The objective of Level 1 is to help children become comfortable in the water while also learning basic water safety. In this class, students will learn and develop kicking skills, floating on front and back, and begin basic stroke movement for freestyle.
Level 2 – Guppies
The objective of Level 2 is for students to continue to develop and fine tune fundamental aquatic skills. In this class, students will build on techniques for freestyle, introduce backstroke, floating on front and back, and underwater swimming. Prerequisites: completion of level 1 of the McKendree MetroRecPlex level 1, or be able to demonstrate level 1 skills, or the ability to swim at least 5 yards freestyle with face in the water and arms coming out of the water.
Level 3 – Pollywogs
The objective of level 3 is to help students continue to master the freestyle and backstroke, while also introducing the breaststroke. In this class, students will continue to build on previously learned skills, while also learning basic breaststroke technique. Additionally the pollywogs will work to become more comfortable in deeper water, and increase their endurance by swimming longer distances. Prerequisites: completion of level 2 of the McKendree MetroRecPlex Level 2, or the ability to demonstrate level 2 skills.
Level 4 – Swordfish
The objective of level 4 will help students to continue to build on skills and strokes taught in previous levels. In this class, students will be introduced to the butterfly stroke and learn to dive. The swordfish students will work more on increasing endurance levels and distances swam. Prerequisites: completion of level 3 or the ability to demonstrate level 3 skills.
Level 5 – Sharks
The objective of level 5 is fine tune and further develop all four strokes. By the end of this class, students will be able to swim at least 25 yards of each stroke with good technique. After completion, students will be proficient in all 4 main strokes as well as water safety. Prerequisites: completion of the McKendree MetroRecPlex Level 4, or the ability to demonstrate level 4 skills.
