Hitting a plateau in your workouts is relatively common. And you might be wondering how to push past it and reach a new level of fitness. The answer is to get out of your comfort zone.

Here are three ways to step outside of your comfort zone:

1. Understand your why.

Have you ever sat down and thought about why you continue to show up and work out? Getting a clear understanding of “your why” can be a big help in pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone. Once you have this specific reason (or reasons) in your mind, it can be the driving force that motivates you to do more and perhaps even to be more.

2. Create smaller goals.

When you face a challenging workout or fitness goal, pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone can be difficult. But if you take that workout or goal and break it down into smaller pieces, then you’re more likely to try something uncomfortable. Creating smaller goals and objectives can help you push through the mental barriers that might be standing between you and where you want to be.

3. Overrule that little voice.

One of the most significant factors in keeping you within your comfort zone is that little voice inside your head. Sometimes this voice can tell you that it’s okay to stop or stay comfortable. If you’ve only got five more reps, it’s the voice that might try to convince you’ve done enough. But if you intend to get outside of your comfort zone, you must overrule this voice. Do those last five reps because your body can handle more than what the little voice tells you.
